Advancing Reproductive Autonomy
Through Resourcing Abortion Accompaniment
Autónoma Fund is a newly established collaborative fund dedicated to advancing reproductive autonomy through the transformative practice of medical abortion accompaniment (MAA). Led by feminist activists from La Red Compañera in Latin America and the Caribbean and MAMA Network in Africa with support from committed funders Autónoma strengthens and scales accompaniment as a safe, effective, person-centered model for abortion care.

Our Origins
Autónoma was co-created by La Red Compañera—a network of 24 groups in 17 countries across Latin America and the Caribbean—and MAMA Network, spanning 72 organizations in 24 African countries. Together, they have built a vibrant, cross-regional feminist infrastructure for safe abortion access and advocacy.
Our Vision
Feminist accompaniment organizations are advancing the freedom to have an abortion and organizing for social justice, happiness, pleasure, and joy. Accompaniment is recognized and valued as an accepted option for safe abortion care. The movement thrives while honoring the wellbeing and dignity of accompaniers and those they support.
Our Mission
Autónoma Fund strengthens the global movement for accompanied, feminist, and safe abortions. We provide flexible, sustainable resources to accompaniment organizations in the Global South, support their holistic care, and create spaces for shared learning, reflection, and solidarity.

Our Approach
Medical abortion accompaniment movements are rooted in community-grounded, feminist strategies that de-medicalize abortion and center care around autonomy, dignity, and compassion. Accompaniers provide person-centered, culturally competent, and stigma-free support to women, trans, and gender-diverse people throughout their abortion journeys.
Beyond direct care, accompaniment networks are vibrant spaces for movement building, fostering peer learning, strengthening collective practice, and deepening cross-regional solidarity. As key actors in Global South-led feminist movements, accompaniment groups advocate for policy and legal reforms, challenge harmful social norms, and advance reproductive justice.
Because accompaniment models are adaptable and community-driven, they make safe abortion information and care accessible to historically marginalized and hard-to-reach populations including adolescents, LBTQ communities, migrants, and those in rural areas while building bridges with local health systems for greater reach and sustainability.
Why It Matters
- Expands access to evidence-based abortion care.
- Centers for women, trans, and gender-diverse people.
- Reaches marginalized populations—adolescents, LBTQ communities, migrants, and rural residents.
- Strengthens community leadership and shifts harmful norms.
- Builds collective power for feminist movement building.

Our Impact So Far
In its first round of funding, Autónoma Fund disbursed $588,478 to support accompaniment groups across Africa and Latin America.
As a fund for accompaniers, by accompaniers, our goal is not only to strengthen access to safe abortion but also to sustain and care for the accompaniers who make this work possible. The grants enabled organizations to meet urgent needs, expand their reach, and invest in long-term infrastructure for the accompaniment movement.
This funding has strengthened the resilience, adaptability, and sustainability of abortion accompaniment initiatives—allowing them to continue offering care grounded in feminist values, community knowledge, and practical solidarity.

Movement Building & Learning
Autónoma Fund is more than a grantmaker—it’s a movement space. We facilitate cross-regional learning, research and documentation, and dialogue that elevate accompaniment as a recognized model of reproductive care.
A movement-led Advisory Group of accompaniers from MAMA and Red Compañera guides our participatory grantmaking—helping design calls, review applications, and make funding recommendations.
